Baiting is the workhorse of broadscale feral pig control for one reason: cost-effectiveness across large areas. When you need to reduce a big, dispersed population quickly, nothing else compares on a per-hectare basis. The National Feral Pig Action Plan and PestSmart both position coordinated baiting as the foundation of landscape-scale control.

Two main bait toxins are used in NSW:

  • 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate), usually in PIGOUT baits, is highly effective and the cheapest option, especially where Local Land Services subsidises the bait. Its drawbacks are real: it is lethal to dogs with no reliable antidote, carries higher non-target risk, and takes 4 to 6 hours to kill.
  • HOGGONE (sodium nitrite), delivered in HOG-HOPPER bait boxes designed to exclude non-targets, is newer. It acts faster (unconsciousness and death in roughly 1 to 3 hours), is rated more humane on the Sharp and Saunders Relative Humaneness Matrix, and has minimal secondary poisoning risk. It costs more than 1080 but is increasingly the preferred choice where non-target safety matters.

The catch with any baiting is bait shyness. Pigs are smart. Rushed free-feeding or a bad batch can teach a mob to avoid baits for good. Proper free-feeding, building the pigs’ confidence with non-toxic bait first, is the difference between a 90 percent result and an expensive failure.

Where Trapping Wins

Trapping shines exactly where baiting struggles. Near houses, sheds, kennels, and stock, where you cannot safely lay poison, a well-run trap removes pigs with zero risk to your dogs, livestock, or native animals. It is also the answer for bait-shy mobs that have stopped responding to poison, and for situations where you want to be certain only pigs are killed, because non-target animals can be released unharmed.

The cost of trapping is labour and discipline. Traps must be pre-fed so a whole mob enters together, checked at least daily for animal welfare reasons, and trapped pigs dispatched humanely by a competent operator following the national Standard Operating Procedures. Trapping done casually educates pigs and wastes the effort. Trapping done properly removes entire family groups in one go.

Why the Best Programmes Use Both

Feral pigs are among the most prolific breeders of any Australian pest. Sows can produce two litters a year, reaching breeding age at 6 to 8 months, so a population can rebound to pre-control levels within 12 to 18 months if pressure stops. To get ahead, you generally need to remove at least 70 percent of the population every year.

No single method reliably hits that target on its own. A well-designed programme sequences them:
